Crying Crocodile Tears

We returned to our sermon series, “Tell Me a Story”, by looking at the Parable of the Shrewd Steward in Luke 16:1-13. Jesus tells a unique parable by using a dishonest man’s actions to demonstrate an important truth. The steward has failed to care for the owners possessions and has squandered them. When he becomes aware that the owner is going to require an accounting, the steward decided to “cook the books” so he can find favor with other people to help him when he is fired. Even the owner was impressed with his shrewd dealings to help himself. Jesus turns this story to make one of the greatest statements we know, but fail to apply well. “No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” (Luke 16:13) We cannot multitask with our devotion to God. It is an all or nothing proposition. Where is your devotion? Whom do you love?
