Delight for the Soul
Sunday we dove into Psalm 37 as we continued our sermon series “Songs for the Soul.” Those who are followers of Christ and trust in the Lord have an abundance of promises from God to rely upon. The world we live in is full of voices competing for our attention. There are voices we face every day trying to convince of trusting in what they say. We have advertisements persuading us our lives will be better with the product they offer. We have people advocating for us to join them in protest over an issue. We have people telling us what they think is best for us and what we should give up. We have people clamoring for us to let our emotions be our guide to right and wrong. We have voices from the past declaring to us our failures and fears. What voice will we listen to and follow? These voices all beckon us to trust them and distrust God’s promises.
The writer of the psalm, David, invites us to analyze the voices by testing the faithfulness of God. He attest, “I have not seen the righteous forsaken.” (v. 25) The righteous is the one who trust in the Lord, the Righteous One. He encourages, “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” (v. 7) God is ever faithful to his people and gladly gives them the desires of their hearts. But God loves us and wants our desires to be right, our desires to be for Him. “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (v. 4) What do you delight in today? Do you hear God calling you to delight in Him?
