Steadfast Love for the Soul, Psalm 118

Sunday morning our sermon series through the Psalms, “Songs for the Soul” continues by focusing on Psalm 118. We can “give thanks to the Lord, for he is good” (v.1) as the psalm writer declares. We have the tendency to forget this truth and can struggle to give thanks, to be a person of gratitude. God has promised and delivered a “steadfast love” to us through the death, burial, and resurrection of his son, Jesus Christ. This one fact, one truth, one reality, is and should be enough to have us sing and declare our thankfulness from now into all of eternity. But, life happens. Life tries to distract and shift our focus to the hurts and pains of the past, the hurts and pains of the present, and the fear of hurts and pains of the future. We need a place to find rest from the onslaught. We need a place where we can weather the storm. We need a stronghold which can endure the assault. We will often seek out our respite in the very things which assail us, the world. However, God has offered us something which can, will, and does provide the refuge we need. “It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust man.” (v. 8) God has offered his son Jesus. Is Jesus enough? Is Jesus enough for you to know God’s love? Is Jesus enough of a reason to be thankful? Is Jesus your refuge?
