Intimacy for the Soul, Psalm 139
Sunday we will continue our sermon series through the Psalms by looking at Psalm 139. David, the writer, is declaring the truth that he cannot get away from God. God is ever present. Wherever David is God will be. This truth can be a point of great comfort or a point of great fear. David extols the beauty of God knowing him intimately and being sovereign over the whole of his life. He desires to know God as well as God knows him. However, David’s sin impedes his ability to know God all the more. Without the remission, the removal, of his sin David’s relationship will be diminished and kept from being the fullness of what God has offered to him. David invites judgement by stating, “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” (v. 23-24) Are you willing to invite God to search your heart and reveal your sins? Are you desiring to know God more regardless of the pain? God already knows us completely, the question we must wrestle with is whether we are willing to begin to know ourselves so we can know Him more.
